Scope

Uraufführung im Museum Franz Gertsch in Burgdorf am 17. November 2012
Premiered in the Museum Franz Gertsch in Burgdorf on November 17th, 2012

With SCOPE, Ania Losinger and Mats Eser break through the boundaries of their earlier worlds of sound. In the last part of their trilogy the electro-acoustic Xala III meets the Fender Rhodes.  An expansive cascade of sound and dance, labyrinthine rhythms and immense, flowing spaces take shape. These are concentrated into instrumental songs that can be listened to on the CD of the same name. And the dervishes dance, the groovers sway, birds fly, excited and joyful, speedily high, then skimming low.
The live performance of Scope is a dialogue between two instruments and two musicians where joy, truth and compositional diversity encounter musical precision.

Berner Zeitung 30.04.2015 by Tina Uhlmann:
Space for Sound Freaks
“SCOPE”, the third album in the trilogy by musician-dancer Ania Losinger and multi-instrumentalist, Mats Eser is a diversified acoustic experience. From the trance-like “Minimal Song” to the rock beats of “Crimson” all the way to the beauty of “Open Space I”: the two musicians have never been so melded. Only from this unity can diversity arise, a game of styles, harmonies, metrics that leads to reverberant compositions. Instead of combining the Xala with Marimba as was done before, Mats Eser plays the Fender Rhodes, an electric piano whose quality of sound blends well with the electro-acoustic version of Ania Losinger’s floor-xylophone, Xala.

Ania Losinger: Dancer and musician, she dances and plays on the first Floor-Xylophone in the world, the Xala. She developed this unique instrument in 1990/99 together with instrument builder Hamper von Niederhäusern. The Xala is a sounding object made of wood and metal chiming bars. It is played by dancing upon it with flamenco shoes and man-high poles. Today three such instruments exist which differ in size and tonal quality. This invention allows for the complete fusion of music and dance.

Mats Eser: In his activity as a musician, composer and producer he expresses himself within a broad stylistic spectrum. The focus of his interest lies in the wealth of percussive sounds and his ability to artistically place them within a musical context.  As a “multi-instrumentalist” he creates ever new and surprising sound mixtures using his marimba, vibraphone, Fender Rhodes, drums, selected cymbals, asian gongs and glass instruments which he has developed himself. The music which emerges has long exceeded stylistic boundaries and is immediate and touching.
